How to change the one you are with? Other
I have a friend, she still hates her job as a flight attendant, and she still isn't engaged to her boyfriend. She's held both the job and the BF for nearly 7 years, each befitting her carefree lifestyle when she adopted them. But now at thirty-five, she's tired of serving drinks in the air to rude people, and she's even more tired of serving drinks to her boyfriend and his immature friends. She wants her life to change or at least she wants to change her boyfriend. But doesn't quite know how to make that happen. Any Idea ladies? |

Dear all, I am four months pregnant, just relocated to Vienna, currently without a job but very actively seeking one. I would LOVE to work for another few months, as long as possible, but think it may be extremely difficult to find employment given my pregnancy. I have a B.A. in Economics and Finance and used to work as a financial analyst in the U.S. Will take up pretty much any employment though, full-/part-time, just to keep myself busy! Any advice? Thanks!!

Not at all. If you make an effort to learn the language, Viennese and Austrians are very very friendly and polite. But if you walk around speaking English to everyone in each cafe, you'll have a totally different experience. Don't be lazy!
Totally agree. Most foreigners don't even try to speak German in shops and with Austrians in general. What do you expect??
Huhu, I agree - it's got nothing to do wiht the language, they are just grumpy as such - it is the famous Wiener Grant. If you just look at people's faces int he street, they look so discontented, it's hard to believe we live in a city that gets top marks on quality of life. And they are definitely not tolerant if you speak another language - though you are lucky it is english and not some eastern european idiom: you'd get far dirtier looks! But if you get to know them, some will open up and you realise that the fabled goldenes Wienerherz does still exist. Don't get frustrated, I find that Vienna has opened up in the past 10 years, you just need to find the right people!

Has anyone had a vaginal birth after cesarean? Expecting
I want to try a VBAC but my doctor here doesn't seem too keen on it. Has anyone had experience with this?
A friend of mine lost her baby with a natural birth after a cesarean in Bruxelles. I had a cesarean too for my first baby and after 6 years I got my second one; I ask if it could be possible to have it normally but the doctor told me that it depends on the size of the baby and his position at the end of pregnancy (the doctor can mesure the size of the head so he knows if it can kome out easily or not , and in this case it is better not to try because your uterus can break that is the risk ) and my son was to big so we decide for a second cesarean. I would not risk if your doctor says it is better to have another cesarian. My doctor was Dr Sacher in Wien.
I'm sure you're right, it's just that I very much want to experience a normal birth, and wish there was a way to do that safely or at least to know in advance if the chances are actually good that all would go smoothly. With the first child, he was just facing up instead of down but otherwise I was perfectly fit and so was he!
Why would you risk it just for the "experience"?? Seems insane and irresponsible.
Someone I know also lost her baby and almost died herself when her uterus ruptured but I don't think she had a doctor who was very involved during the whole process. From what I've heard it depends on how big the baby is, how much time has past since last birth, and what the reason for the 1st c-section was. You should also find a doctor who is an expert in VBACs.
I am sure that one should follow your doctor's advice. BUT, just for the record: My first child was a cesarean birth (this was back in the middle ages 1984). She was in the breach position. When my second child was due in 1986, the same doctor who delivered my first child, wanted to try to deliver the second child naturally. I am sure that much depended on the position of the child, etc...but the birth was quick, uncomplicated and perfectly successful...and the baby was 10 lbs 11 ounces...that's big! So my advice is to listen to your doctor (if you trust them as many are much happier with cesareans because they can be scheduled!) as he/she will be the only one to determine how safe a natural delivery would be. I am only here to say that it can be done successfully and that I understand your wish to have a natural birth. Best wishes.
Thanks so much for your post. Most of my friends dont' understand why I would "risk it." The hard part has been knowing if the doctor is against trying for a vaginal birth only because he doesn't want to face any risk at all, or because that is his true medical advice. I've gotten a 2nd and 3rd doctor's opinion now and have decided to make the decision closer to the due date based on their advice. Thumbs pressed...
I understand that you want to have a natural birth. I was quite disappointed when my first one was a cesarean - I had felt so ready to have a natural birth. It may be difficult for others to understand who haven't experienced the same. In any case, you are being very careful and checking out all the possibilities and it is wise to hold off on any decision until you are closer to your due date. You won't 'risk anything'..if it's risky, you won't do it...but there is a good chance that by the time you get close to delivery your doctor will feel that it isn't. Best wishes!
Hi, my only advice is to get a second medical opinion/change doctor. I can recommend dr widrich we are trying for a vba2c with her in some weeks.
And I would not wait until the end to decide, as if you decide for a vbac having a supporting team is essential...

Which Vienna hospital to choose? Expecting
I was in GK hospital with my first baby. Would anyone recommend Rudolfinerhaus or Doebling over GK. Thanks.
Did you have a good experience? Rudolfinerhaus is definitely more luxus, but MUCH farther away from a big hospital if there are any complications. Many of my friends gave birth at Rudolfinerhaus, but I have also heard a few really bad stories about emergencies where there wasn't enough time to call in doctors from nearby hospitals or rush the baby somewhere. I just feel much safer knowing the AKH is 5mins away if anything goes wrong.
I had 2 kids at Rudolfinerhaus. Very nice to let yourself be spoiled and recuperate after the birth.
I would never give birth at Rudolfinerhaus. It is basically a hotel with some medical equipment. If something goes wrong, they are not equipped and you are far far away from a real hospital.

Child birth - "kassa" or private Expecting
Would like to hear peoples opinions on whether to go Kassa or private for the birth, and any recommendations as to which hospital. Are there really any advantages to going private, and is the "kassa" service really as good as made out to be?
I think Austrian Kassa is top. Sometimes you have to wait longer than private patients, but otherwise, the quality of the doctors is great. In Austria, actually, Kassa doctors tend to have more experience than private. As for the birth, the negative with Kassa is you don't get to go to the nicer birthkliniks like the Goldenes Kreuz, Rudolfinerhaus, etc. But, it's only for 5 days, right?
There is no way that Kassa doctors are more experienced then those that only accept private patients.
Semmelweisklinik and AKH both are good birthstations and are "Kassa"
Yes, but nurses are so rushed and one feels it.

WHich is the best English-language international school in Vienna? Body & Mind
Everyone says that the American International is great, but I hear it is hard to get into if you are not an American.
Mine are at the Danube school. Early Years program. So far so good. The teacher is phenomenal.
Plus, benefit of the Danube is that there are many more Austrians there -- approx. 40%.
Danube School is for spoiled rich Austrians. Tacky.
Ouch.
We transferred out of VIS into the AIS because VIS weren't teaching any hard reading or math skills. All about Units of Inquiry there. Plus the problem is that they take EVERY diplomat kid, so there are tons of kids who have never spoken English. Huge weight on the English speakers and the quality of the instruction.

Beauty Dermatologist Body & Mind
Anyone have a good dermatologist / beautician here? It's time for some smoothing and plumping I think, so someone more for beauty and less for medical please.
Dr. Palatin im 1. Bezirk is the best in Vienna for beauty treatments -- Botox, fillers, etc. He has a good eye.
He does tend to go a bit overboard I find. Yes, he knows about all the latest technologies, but he is a bit too eager to beautify. Some of the women waiting in his office do look rather scary.
I haven't asked but he will definitely give you good advice. V capable.
I am a former beauty seeking patient of Dr. Palatin. I did not have a good experience with him and would never recommend him to anyone. When I arrived at his offices I was greeted with a very judgmental staff, waited about an hour before I was escorted to an examining room in which I continued to wait another 20 minutes. He finally showed up with a very unfriendly kind of “you are not worth my time” attitude. I felt very rushed and my time with him could not have lasted more than 10 minutes…and in those 10 cold minutes I received full botox and a his unsolicited opinion of what else I should do to look better. Then came the biggest shock of all…THE BILL!!!! His prices were so astronomical that I would have to assume that some beauty seekers may need to take out a loan or dip into their kid’s college fund just to afford his services.
If you are seeking an HONEST opinion, no criticism, and a nice overall experience then you must go to Dr.Worseg. Don’t let the fact that he is one of the best if not the best plastic surgeon in Austria scare you into thinking that he comes in with a scalpels at his side ready to nip and tuck! He is an all around specialist being it from a minor botox treatment all the way to reconstructive surgeries that have nothing to do with beauty. I have had a few procedures done by him, the most minor being botox, and every time I see him it is as if I am meeting an old friend. I recommended him to a few of my friends and none of them had ever a bad word to say and were all very pleased with the outcome. The prices are reasonable, office beautiful and the staff is great. They even offer you coffee while you wait…the only minus in the experience but with such personalized treatment it is worth it.
Check out his website…it is in German but don’t worry his and the staffs English is fantastic and if needed he also has a Russian translator on hand.
Dr. Worseg

I had a similar experience with Dr. Palatin and appreciate knowing I was not alone. I went in for a small red pealing spot above my lip on which Palatin did a biopsy. With an extreme reaction to the fact this could be cancer and I could loose my lip (not thoughtful to the emotional psyche), he insisted upon a complete face peal - a long unattractive process and as it turned out 2000 euros later, completely unnecessary as the red spot remained as before.
I returned for him to be aware of this, only to be told i needed another biopsy for euro 300 otherwise this could be 'chronic - loosing my lip came up again in a somewhat hysterical way. I also felt due to the circumstances, this consultation should be for free - like most, lasting perhaps five minutes. He raged about how could he make a living if he did this for all his clients. No bedside manner and as well, i know he has NO financial problems!
I have now seen Dr. Gabrielle Hobisch who also takes Wiener Gebiets Krankenkasse, and feel I am getting realistic professional treatment.
Dr. Gabrielle Hobisch
Linke Wienzeile 6/11

Even for beauty fanatics, I am now more than aware that Palatin is more about the 'whose who' than who you are and what the core of the skin problem might be. In other words, don't go there!
Dr. Heidemarie Schön -- yes that's her real name. Porzellangasse 44-46 Top 6, 1090. All my friends go to her --also for normal dermatological issues.

I can't take this rain anymore!! Body & Mind
I can't deal with this rain anymore. In the last 6 weeks I've been to Family Fun and Bogi Park more times than one should in a lifetime. And if I step foot in the Naturhistorische Museum once more I may explode. Does anyone have other good indoor tips???
You should check out the Zoom Kinder museum. (http://www.kindermuseum.at) Just know you have to make a reservation but you can do it online.
Haus des Meeres, various indoor climbing places around town. Fun if you have kids 4+.
Made by You in the 4th or in the 9th are always good.
Go to the Schmetterlinghaus in the Burggarten. At least there you can close your eyes and pretend you are in some hot, humid tropical paradise. Incidentally, it's also my secret tip for taking the kids in winter when they are all stuffed up. Instant giant humidifier -- nothing beats it.
That is disgusting. Remind me never to go again in winter.

Sex after kids Body & Mind
How often do most people have sex with their spouse? After 2 kids and 6 years of marriage, we're often down to once every 2 weeks! Is that normal?
Wish I was that "normal". Its been 1 month already. How depressing. Can't say I missed it though.
Hope your husband doesnt know that. Or feel the same way.
I hear alot of my girlfriends talking about this, but can't understand it. You need to be having sex at least once a week, regardless of kids or how tired you are. Don't forget, your spouse was there before the kids were and if you need to put each other first no matter what.
If you don't sleep with your husband regularly, someone else will.
Thats pretty cynical.
Maybe but its true. Face it.

Zweisprachige Kindererziehung Body & Mind

Knoblauch??!!

The Starbucks on Neubaugasse is SMOKE free and fairly large with couches and such. Unfortunately there aren't a lot of smoke free places in Vienna.......
I like Cafe der Provinz in the 8th. Good food (crepes, gallettes), great coffee and hot chocolate, toys to play with in the back, and has always been non-smoking.

Kinderzeit, Kutschkergasse in the 18th is also great. They even have play groups every tue and thu.
